During this new norm era, face mask is definitely a fashion statement – It has become a staple to your everyday routine. Meeting your friends for a coffee session, what do you need to wear? Face mask. Feeling like getting a French baguette downtown, what do you need to take with you? Face mask. Not feeling well and need to see the doctor at the hospital A&E, what must you wear to prevent others getting infected? Face mask.
It’s a lie if you have not made face mask your new best friend. “I can’t go by my day without wearing one. I would immediately know that something is missing!” “I need to have at least more than one face mask in my bag just in case!” Eventhough face mask has become a shield in preventing us from Covid-19, however behind all the positive things we have heard, face mask do have its downside as well – Like Maskne.
What is ‘Maskne’ and how have we not heard of it?
Well, it is common especially during Covid-19 season. They are acnes that formed around your cheeks and sometimes on your nose, lips and even at he tip of your chin after using face mask for a long period of time. (I got them and they are hard to deal with!).
According to The New York Times, Maskne is a real thing. A clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of medicine, Dr. Mona Gohara says that she herself gotten Maskne due to wearing three layers of masks (a KN95 which is similar to a N95) topped with a disposable mask and face shield in order to keep her clean while undergoing procedures.
Front-line and healthcare workers are most at risk in getting Maskne as their masks are much tighter and they would wear it longer than any of us in a day. Some say they could even feel it forming on your face whilst swishing around with oil and sweats behind their mask – Irritating isn’t it?
Products that Treats Maskne. Read On.
If you have Maskne, then you might want to read this segment till the end. Maskne can be pretty annoying to those who have never had acnes before. That is why we are listing down products that happened to work with those who have tried them! Also, we believe less in more when it comes to getting rid of Maskne. All you need is a gentle cleanser, serum, pimple ointment and last but not least, sunscreen.
CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser
I can’t stress enough how effective this cleanser has been in treating Maskne. Not only its gentle to the skin, it even has three essential ingredients like Salicylic Acid, Ceramides and Hyaluronic Acid – perfect for dry, rough and bumpy skin.
Annur Deep Serum (Face + Neck)
Our ‘holy grail’ right there – Not only it is good for your skin, it is also made with natural ingredients such as Trigona Honey (an anti-inflammatory agent that helps to reduce redness), Rose Oil (reduce inflammation and hyperpigmentation) and Aloe Vera (reduce inflammation and redness) and a good amount of Retinol to fix uneven skin texture, fine lines and acne. Highly recommended!
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
Our go-to product. Affordable, yet affective! Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) is indicated to reduce the appearance of skin blemishes and congestion. A high 10% concentration of this vitamin is supported in the formula by zinc salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid to balance visible aspects of sebum activity. Bare in mind that this is not an acne treatment. However, it helps in brightening blemishes over time.
La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen SPF 60
A personal favourite – I first encountered this product when I was in Amsterdam and ever since I laid eyes on it, I am never going back to any other sunscreens out there! If you have sensitive skin then this product suits best for you! This multi-award winning facial sunscreen provides advanced protection in a lightweight, matte finish fluid. It helps visibly reduce the appearance of sun damage and is formulated with Cell-Ox Shield® technology: broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with antioxidants.
All in all, Maskne is completely normal. Try letting your skin to go on a SkinCare Diet (where you limit yourself from using 4 or less skincare products in 2 weeks. You’re going to thank me later!) Sometimes less is more and that probably what your skin needs when you’re facing Maskne. Find time to treat them, make sure your hands are clean thoroughly before applying any skincare products onto your face. Better yet, try not to wear make-up for a few days just to allow your skin to breathe a little.
Treat your skin like how you would treat yourself. By that, drink enough water, wash your hands and cleanse your face thoroughly, wear your mask, practice social distancing and sanitize, always. The new norm may not be easy, but always remember that you are not alone and we are in this together.
